A customer recently came to us with a 45 × 45 × 10 mm centrifugal blower used in a drone application. On paper, it looked fine. In testing, it wasn’t.
The issue traced back to something you’d never catch without a trained eye: the impeller extended slightly beyond the blower housing. Under real-world conditions — vibration, movement, light contact — that small overhang was enough to let the impeller brush against surrounding parts, creating abnormal noise during flight.

In centrifugal blower design, the clearance between the impeller and the housing is one of those specs that rarely gets discussed outside engineering teams — but it has an outsized effect on real-world performance. Even a fraction of a millimeter of excess clearance can allow:
- Intermittent contact under vibration or shock
- Abnormal noise that appears only during operation, not at rest
- Long-term wear on the impeller or housing
- Inconsistent behavior across units, since tolerances stack differently unit to unit
Because the effect is intermittent, this kind of issue is also notoriously hard to catch on a bench test. It often only shows up once the part is in the field — exactly what happened here.
The Fix: A Fully Enclosed Impeller, Same Electrical Performance
Our engineering team redesigned the blower with the impeller fully enclosed inside the frame, eliminating the contact risk entirely — while matching the original sample’s current and speed performance exactly.
That last part matters. A mechanical fix that changes the electrical spec just creates a new integration problem for the customer. The goal was a drop-in replacement: same power draw, same output, zero contact risk.

That’s a useful reminder for anyone specifying small blowers or fans for compact, motion-sensitive applications: the mechanical fit is just as important as the electrical spec sheet.
